The rapidly changing environment in which social science reference librarians serve is forcing many to seek new strategies for coaching researchers through the maze of electronic information sources. This paper discusses the challenges of the automated enviroment as evidenced by the changing academic scholar's needs and expectations, researcher-librarian relations, and new instructional demand associated with automation
