Abstract

Cross-cultural or intercultural communicative competence requires more than learning the language of the other culture; social cultural competence also is necessary and this involves understanding of the culture, social knowledge and cognition of native speakers of the language. Social pragmatic differences can lead to breakdowns in communication. Acquisition of any language requires the learner to face challenges that go beyond form, function, and use of language. Challengens beyond semantics include multiple meanings and connotations of words. Challenges beyond phonology include awareness of the importance of subtle differences in pronunciation. Challenges beyond pragmatics include relating to the cognitive styles, cultural patterns, and differences in the concept of time, so that one is able to code-switch pragmatically and linguistically. Challenges beyond translation include unterstanding the feelings and cultural imperatives of the interpreter. Nonverbal messages also differ amog cultures. Anecdotes are used throughout the article to illustrate the challenges one faces in becoming truly bilingual and bicultural
