Abstract

Reports on a project carried out by the Department of Health, UK, to gather statistical returns showing the extent of referrals, assessments and packages of care provided to adult clients by social services departments. Explores why this project encountered difficulties. Examines complexities brought about by differing definitions, challenges to fit data gathered within the context of differing departmental relationships, attitudes of staff towards providing information, difficulties arising from the variation in information systems, and methodological issues
