Abstract: Discusses the critical choice confronting users of academic libraries in selecting from the torrent of data and information which can be released from databases. Notes the paradox that computers have led not to a paperless society but to increased paper consumption for printouts. Consicers the relationship of data technology, information, retrieval, knowledge and learning and the implications of this for students and researchers in the modern special or academic library. If these libraries develop into teaching libraries where users are trained to know how to obtain what they want, making critical choices, they will find themselves at a rich intersection of print, electronic media and neurological process
