Vor dem Hintergrund einer immer dynamischeren wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung sowie der zunehmenden internationalen Verflechtung in zahlreichen Industriezweigen, gewinnt Wissen bereits seit Jahren als betriebswirtschaftliche Ressource für Unternehmen an Bedeutung. Anbieter von Fachinformationen - wie beispielsweise auch LexisNexis - haben ein grundlegendes Interesse daran, die Entwicklungen im Bereich des Wissensmanagements genau zu verfolgen. Ziel der im März 2003 durchgeführten Studie war es daher, ein realistisches Bild zum aktuellen Stand des Wissensmanagements in Deutschland zu geben. Befragt wurden Führungskräfte der ersten und zweiten Ebene aus 303 Unternehmen. Die telefonische Befragung fand in der ersten Märzhälfte 2003 statt. Jeweils zu gleichen Teilen stammten die Befragten aus den Branchen Banken / Versicherungen, Beratung, Medien, Pharma/Chemie sowie Automobil/Maschinenbau. Damit stand für jede der Branchen eine Stichprobe zur Verfügung, die aussagekräftige Schlüsse für die Grundgesamtheit zulässt. Wichtigstes Ergebnis der Studie: Wissen/Information wird von deutschen Unternehmen allgemein als wichtige Ressource anerkannt. Höhere Werte erreichte in der Studie lediglich die Ressource "Qualifizierte Mitarbeiter". Trotz eines klaren Bekenntnisses zu Wissensmanagement, zeigten die befragten Unternehmen noch Zurückhaltung bei Investitionen in Wissensmanagement wie beispielsweise die Einrichtung von Stellen oder Investitionen in Informationsdienste und in Systeme für Wissensmanagement. Wissen in Form konkreter Daten - beispielsweise Kundendaten, Daten zu Marktanteilen etc. - wird von deutschen Unternehmen im Schnitt als wichtiger eingestuft als Prozess Know-how - beispielsweise Vertriebserfahrung. Bevor in Wissensmanagement investiert wird, wollen die Unternehmen in der Mehrheit sichergehen, dass ein Nutzen zu erwarten ist. Effizienzmessung spielt daher eine zentrale Rolle.
