Abstract

Mit der Online-Enzyklopädie Wikipedia scheint sich ein alter Traum der Hypertextpioniere zu verwirklichen - ein Wissensnetz, in dem Nutzer die Informationen nicht nur abrufen, sondern aktiv mitgestalten. Mit einem Klick kann jeder Internetbesucher bei Wikipedia (und anderen Wikis) die Texte nicht nur lesen, sondern schnell und unkompliziert ergänzen, korrigieren oder umschreiben. Seit seinem ersten Tag, dem 15. Januar 2001, wächst Wikipedia rapide: Waren im Januar 2003 gerade einmal 12.000 Artikel bei Wikipedia.de online, existierten im Dezember 2004 bereits 186.000 deutschsprachige und bei wikipedia.org 446.000 englischsprachige Beiträge. Von Algebra bis Züsedom finden Wissensdurstige eine Vielzahl klassischer Lexikonthemen, aber auch brandaktuelle Geschehnisse oder Nischenwissen haben bei Wikipedia ein Zuhause. Was verbirgt sich hinter diesem Phänomen? Euphorische WikipediaNutzer sehen schon das Ende traditioneller Wissenssammlungen wie dem Brockhaus nahen. Unbestreitbar ist, dass wir es mit einer neuen Art der kollektiven Wissensproduktion zu tun haben. Das Potenzial von Wikipedia und der Wiki-Technologie muss sich aber erst noch beweisen.
