Abstract
Der vorliegende Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der Rolle des Fachs "Bibliothekswissenschaft" in Gegenwart und Zukunft. Über eine Definition des Faches im Rückgriff auf die Bestimmung des Begriffs "Bibliothek" nach Umstätter werden die Frage nach der " Methode ", die Verortung des Faches im System der Wissenschaften sowie die denkbare gesellschaftliche Relevanz des Faches erörtert. Es wird argumentiert, dass die Bibliothek in der Form, wie sie der Bibliothekswissenschaft zugrunde liegt, in einer Wissensgesellschaft, deren Kommunikationsraum ein virtueller ist, grundlegenden Veränderungen unterworfen ist. Diesen Veränderungen muss die Bibliothekswissenschaft als Disziplin nicht nur Rechnung tragen, sondern, soweit ihr dies möglich ist, gestaltend und lenkend wirken. Eine zukunftsfähige Bibliothekswissenschaft muss proaktiv bei der Entwicklung von tragfähigen und dem menschlichen Maß angepassten Konzepten zum Umgang mit (publizierter) Information und den hinter dieser stehenden Erzeugungs- und besonders Distributionsprozessen in einer sich perspektivisch vorwiegend durch elektronische Netzwerke bestimmte und dabei ausgesprochen heterogenen und heterarchisch selbstorganisierenden Informationsumwelt wirken.
