Abstract

America's higher education system does not have a modern tool of information retrieval iby subject. The failure to fulfill that mission belongs to the Library of Congress Subject Headings. Although the consequences of such failure are awesome, no effort is going on to adopt a different subject indexing vocabulary. If that substitution does not happen soon enough, harm will be inflicted on the millions of students attending colleges and universities, as well as the legions of professionals who use research libraries all over North America. The crisis has to be brought into the open and given the wide discussion it deserves, especially in the United States and Canada.
