Abstract

The study of Information Retrieval Support Systems (IRSS) focuses on the next generation retrieval systems and Web search engines. It is an emerging research field driven by the demands, challenges, and opportunities of the fast growing Web. The philosophy of IRSS requires us to go beyond the two basic tasks of browsing and searching provided by current retrieval systems. We must provide the necessary new utilities, tools, and languages that help and support a user to perform multiple tasks in finding useful information and knowledge. In the Web context, IRSS may be viewed as an important type of Web-based systems supporting Web Intelligence (WI). The main objective of this entry is to provide an overview of the study of IRSS, covering the emergence of IRSS, the architecture of IRSS, and implementation-related issues.
