Abstract

COMPASS headings have been appearing in BNB MARC based products supplied by the National Bibliographic Service since Jan. 1991 and there has been much interest in both their structure and usage. Defines COMPASS, explains the change from PRECIS to COMPASS by the British Library, and COMPASS's relationship to PRECIS/DDC. Discusses how COMPASS headings are constructed, how COMPASS treats geographic areas, historical periods and biographies, and explains COMPASS connectives, standards, reference structure, authority file and user manuals
