Abstract

Seit geraumer Zeit ist Nachhaltigkeit ein wichtiges Konzept in der Debatte um die Folgen des Technikeinsatzes. Noch bedeutender ist der Begriff jedoch im Zusammenhang mit dem Umgang mir knappen Ressourcen, derzeit vor allem in Hinblick auf Energieträger. Recherchiert man nach dem Ausdruck "Informationsnachhaltigkeit", so ist die Ausbeute aber cher gering; Informationsnachhaltigkeit scheint bisher nicht die Bedeutung zu haben, wie dies für Nachhaltigkeit selber gilt. Dafür gibt es allerdings auch gum Gründe, denn das übliche Verständnis von Nachhaltigkeit kann für Informationsnachhaltigkeit nicht einfach übernommen werden. Die üblichen Beispiele für Nachhaltigkeit sind solche, die sich auf einen knappen Rohstoff beziehen, bspw. Kupfer. Nachhaltigkeit bedeutet dann unter anderem, diesen Rohstoff durch Recycling so verlustfrei wie möglich einzusetzen. Im Bereich der Energie wiederum wird von Nachhaltigkeit gesprochen, wenn die Energiequellen im Rahmen menschlichen Handelns nicht erschöpfbar sind - also letztlich alle Energiequellen, die sich durch Sonnenaktivität sofort oder schnell regenerieren: Windenergie, Solarthermie und Photovoltaic, Wasserkraft oder nachwachsende Rohstoffe. Letztere haben zudem den Charme, dass sie kohlenstoffneutral sind. Der sparsame oder nachhaltige Gebrauch von Rohstoffen betrifft vor allem den Wirtschaftskreislauf und den Schutz der Umwelt. Allerdings wird inzwischen auch von sozialer Nachhaltigkeit gesprochen. Hier wird gemeint, dass die Gestaltung der sozialen Verhältnisse einer Gesellschaft dann nachhaltig ist, wenn sie soziale Stabilität, den allgemeinen Wohlstand und das friedliche, kooperative und gleichberechtigte Zusammenleben der Bürger einer Gesellschaft fördern. Nun scheinen sich Wissen und Informationen von anderen Ressourcen deutlich zu unterscheiden. Einmal erzeugt, können Wissen und Informationen nicht auf die gleiche Weise verbraucht werden wie bspw. Rohöl. Wissen und Informationen. sind, in der Sprache der Ökonomie, reine öffentliche Güter, da ihre Nutzung, zumindest prima facie, nicht rival ist und niemand von vornherein von der Nutzung exkludiert wird - erst die Anwendung von Immaterialgüterrechten wie Urheberrechten lässt Informationsgüter zu einem knappen Gut werden. Da Wissen und Informationen andere Eigenschaften als andere Güter besitzen, soll in dem folgenden Beitrag versucht werden, genauer zu bestimmen, worin dann Informationsnachhaltigkeit bestehen könnte.
