Abstract

Recht der Gleichen statt Recht der Stärkeren - Macht drängt nach mehr Macht und Reichtum nach mehr Reichtum, eine Dynamik, die den Zusammenhalt einer Gesellschaft gefährdet und sie zu zerstören droht: Dies ist eine der frühesten Einsichten der Zivilisationsgeschichte. Macht bedarf daher stets einer robusten Einhegung. Das bedeutendste Schutzinstrument für eine Zivilisierung von Macht stellt die egalitäre Leitidee der Demokratie dar. Rainer Mausfeld zeigt entlang historischer Linien auf, dass der Begriff der Demokratie seiner ursprünglichen Bedeutung beraubt worden ist und heute als Demokratierhetorik für Herrschaftszwecke missbraucht wird. Dadurch ist es in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten zu einer Entzivilisierung von Macht gekommen, deren psychische, gesellschaftliche und ökologische Auswirkungen die menschliche Zivilisation insgesamt bedrohen.
