Abstract

Addresses some of the popular myths which have grown up around CD-ROM technology: imminent obsolescence of CD-ROM; replacement of CD-ROM by high-speed wide area networks; location of all databases on online catalogues; Novell NetWare are the only local area network worth considering; CD-ROM drives always attach to a computer via a SCSI interface; CD-ROM is slow; Caddies are bad; the uses of CD-ROM are known and will remain constant; there is only a single reliable indicator of CD-ROM drive performance; writable CD-ROMs or inexpensive hard disc drives will supplant CD-ROM
