Abstract

Reviews the history of the UDC against the background of the 50th anniversary of the British Standard BS1000 series, the English editions of the UDC, and the completion of the UDC database created by the UDC Consortium in The Hague. Based on the machine readable text database, for the first edition of BS1000M (1985) as the starting point, the new UDC database will be an indispensable tool for managing and maintaining the classification scheme both by helping to eliminate the problems of the past, such as ambiguities and discrepancies between editions, and by improving the efficiency of revision and updating; making it easy to search for existing coverage of any concept, and helping to avoid inadvertent duplication
