Abstract

Compares the 3 mainstream CD-ROM bibliographic databases covering the literature of library and information science: LISA PLUS (the CD-ROM version of LISA); Library Literature (WilsonDisc) and Information Science Abstracts Plus (published by SilverPlatter and incorporating a subset of ERIC). Assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the 3 databases in terms of: scope and coverage, Currency; user interface and search facilities; and the individual features of each database. Concludes the LISA PLUS is the most useful in a UK context, because of its excellent, balanced, international coverage. However, some aspects of its subject indexing gave cause for concern (LiLi gave similar cause for concern) and its user interface was judged not to be very user friedly. Nevertheless, where topics move from the periphery of the centre of the LIS field, LISA accurately reflects this. LISA's coverage of the literature of CD-ROM applications in the LIS environment is unmatched. ISA Plus has a very friedly user interface, but virtually uncontrolled terms and can only be regarded as a complementary source because of its US emphasis, though it is an important back up source for any topic in the information technology and computing areas. Lack of currency was a concern for users of all 3 services
