Abstract

Introduces the articles in a special issue partially devoted to the role of information in democracy. Highlights the paradox that although Americans are increasingly alienated from the political system they have access to unprecedented media and information sources. Considers theories of democracy and examines the changing information environment discussing the shifts in the nature of information systems, ownership and economics, and the content of information resources. Examines the political implication of these shifts
